I am currently reading Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel. I chose it as my first ebook of the year only because of the opening sentence: ‘Travelling: the dank, oily days after Christmas.’
Lovely. But that’s now not to say there isn’t nevertheless seasonal fun to be had: the Christmas diary entries of Samuel Pepys had been fun clivejw. The 1667 entries couldn’t be greater than Pepsyian if they tried. After strolling approximately in various parts of London on Christmas Eve and a go-to to the Swan Inn in New Palace Yard, where he manages to “bear” the barmaid, he visits the middle of the night mass at the Queen’s Chapel. He complains about the group and says he fears his pocket being picked. However, he soon overcomes this anxiousness by employing his normal diversion:
But right here, I did make myself do la Cosa with mere imagination, Mirando a la Jolie most and with my eyes open, which I in no way did before, and God forgive me for it, it is in the Chapel. He enjoys the song of the Chapel but displays negatively on the ‘frivolous’ career and, simultaneously, the inattention of the ‘papists’ to it, as they count number their beads with one hand and “point and play and speak and make symptoms with the alternative” (is this much less pious than ejaculating after an erotic fable?) And then proceeds shortly to note how “prettily” the King’s mistress, Lady Castlemaine, appears in her nightclothes! Sign up for the Bookmarks email.

Elsewhere, Vieuxtemps is determined to end the year with Faulkner’s The Sound And The Fury, And it gets better and stranger with each bypass. Score a ten out of 10 on the Southern Weirdo Scale. Recommended for those that like Southern Weirdo Lit. Talking of weirdness, JamesLibTech has started on Jesse Ball’s upcoming novel Census:
It’s very unconventional and bizarre. I’m about a third of the way in, and I do not even have the slightest of thoughts about what’s happening and where the story is going, but he’s an extraordinary author, so I’m looking forward to getting through it.
William Gibson’s Neuromancer also seems unusual to resextensa:
I didn’t lie; I found it pretty disorienting. Undoubtedly, that’s part of the factor; however, while I don’t want to be spoonfed, some moments glide into such obscurity that they border on outright incoherence. That apart, it’s bright and fascinating, and I don’t have any plans to position it down. However, I’ll examine it three more times to absorb it well.
Back with realism, Tom Mooney has observed The Power Of The Dog using Thomas Savage’Savage’sbly “dark”: “It t “tells the tale of brothers who run a big Montana cattle ranch in the nineteen-twenties. They stay alone, other than the help, for years, jogging matters as they always have. Then, one brother marries a nearby window and brings her onto the ranch with her ‘sissy’s, ‘throwing the brotherbrothers’ng into unspoken disarray. The subtlety of the ebook took me quiet via Marvel as it shuns movement and plot in favor of realism and introspection because the top of the old West clashes with the advent of 20th-century life.
I didn’t love the ebook; however, I preferred it as a quiet, meticulous, and noticeable literary work of art so one can live long in the memory.
Finally, one ultimate word on Christmas from PortlandRace: I started last week analyzing the first section (‘Winter’) of L’urie Lee’s VLee’se Christmas And Other Notes at the English Year. Growing up in a small Dorset village (before leaving for London), I relate so much to Lee’s dLee’sionci to rural lifestyles (and Christmas). His writing movements me in a way uncommon in an author – to me, it is quite beautiful. ‘Spring’ will ‘follow in a month or so. That seems like an amazing promise to me.
Interesting links between books and reading. “Much an “o about no longer a lot”: The “New York Times weighs in on Lily Cole and the Brontë society. “He Ame” icons malodorous, ill-mannered, and invading his privacy.” “Charles Dickens didn’t dwell on the alternative side of the Atlantic.
Two journalists have retraced John SteinbeStSteinbeSteinbeck’sn Willa Cather’CaCather’Cather’ssn to be made available online. Bette Midler has been doing some serious reading.
